What’s the themed semester about?

From October 2026, the Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistical Applied Mathematics (SAMBa) and the Institute for Mathematical Innovation (IM), with support from the Faculties of Science and Engineering & Design, are delivering a themed semester on Environmental and Climate Resilience. The theme reflects one of the most pressing challenges of our time — not only working to limit climate change, but building the resilience to live with the change that is already underway. It is a topic where Mathematical Sciences has real expertise to offer, and this themed semester provides an opportunity to help lead the conversation both on campus and beyond.

The semester comes at an important moment for building new collaborations, in Bath and further afield, that will support research and doctoral funding. Funding to support activity is available through SAMBa, IMI, and the Faculties of Engineering and Science.

The aim is to generate research collaborations that are interesting and beneficial. Everything delivered as part of the themed semester will have a link to the mathematical sciences, but it does not need to be led from within the department.
