Understanding the Resilience of the Future UK Electricity Grid to Extreme Weather
- Date: 21 October 2026
- Location: TBD
Summary
This will be a workshop with academics from maths and the Faculty of Engineering and Design, SAMBa PhD students and well as industry partners representing grid operators, battery storage operators, wind/solar experts and tidal power developers. We will work on modelling the grid demand under extreme weather (e.g. Guardian article) and understanding how different energy mixes will give different levels of resilience in future. The ideas underpinning the workshop have been explored in two separate SAMBa ITTs (one on offshore renewables, one on grids). Bringing both themes together and understanding how the energy mix affects the performance of the grid, through the lens of extreme weather and its effects on both supply and demand, will unlock new mathematical questions which Bath is uniquely-positioned to answer.
